1928 - Ile de Port-Cros, Var, France. D. H. Lawrence and his wife Frieda are living on a small island off the Southern French coast. Lawrence is a very ill man and less than two years away from his own, untimely death. An unexpected letter from David Chambers spurs D. H. Lawrence to reminisce on his early life.

In a series of vibrant snap-shots, Paul Slack, as D. H. Lawrence, reflects on the personalities and events, which shaped his early years. "Phoenix Rising" explores the duality of Lawrence's tormented life from his birth to the death of his mother.

This audio recording of "Phoenix Rising" is based on the theatre production, which is currently touring the UK following a successful run at the Adelaide Festival. Written by Campell Kay and Directed by Sony Award winner John Tams.

"Paul Slack gives a totally absorbing portrayal not only as Lawrence but of the many characters who shaped his early life… an excellent dramatic experience which is consistently entertaining and, ultimately, profoundly moving. I thoroughly recommend it!" … BBC Radio
"Spellbinding!" … Sir Ian Holm "Moving and skilfully scripted" … Sir Derek Jacobi

Praise for Paul Slack's award-winning recording of Sons & Lovers:
"Slack is able to paint an exquisite picture for the listener… he reads with pathos and great emotion, with rage and with passion; it is difficult to imagine a better rendition." Soundcommentry.com
